We were up early and raring to go but it was still dark and we needed coffee and breakfast. At 6:50 we headed out. It was just getting light.
The first 3 miles were narrow paved road which we are used to. When we got to the first turn, I had to look real close because it looked like someone’s driveway. But, there was a road sign so we turned and weaved our way through a pack of dogs. Soon we were on a forest service road going up, up, and up. After about 11 miles we reached the second turn. There was a small path into the woods barely big enough for the truck. It got smaller and quite rough. Within a few minutes, I had to get the saw out so we could get around a blowdown.
Deep and long mud bogs, washed out areas nearly 4′ deep, brush swiping all sides of the truck made for a harrowing experience. There was no turning back, we were committed, or should have been committed! 😂. But this stretch was only about 5 miles so we pressed on and we’re soon out of that area.
We picked up a hitchhiker along the way. Sharon gasped when I had to turn on the wipers, I did really!
I just dragged this one out of the way and moved on.
Random beauty shots. We were in the trees most of the day and vistas were far and few.
After lunch in Tellico Plains, TN, we drove down Witt Rd. Which is famous for its four water crossings, here are a couple.
We met two TAT riders from Quebec, we remembered seeing them at breakfast. We stopped and talked a bit. They were amazed that we were driving the TAT. Due to a foul up with the GPS, we arrived in Tellico Plains via another route so didn’t see them in town. They are supposed to be staying here tonight, but haven’t seen them so far.
If we had driven the highway from Andrews it would have taken us 40 minutes!
