Another early start as we had a 17 mile drive back to the trail. Arrived just in time for sunrise and in a few minutes we were heading for Oklahoma. Didn’t take long to cross the state line. The roads here had little gravel on them and we were riding on bedrock. Fred and Barney would have been right at home.
The scenery here is surprising, lots of trees, rolling hills, and pastures. Not what we had expected. Soon we would see the prairie land that we had been looking for. We had several wet crossings and you could tell that there had been a lot of flooding recently. OK is no place to be in wet weather. But soon we were out of all that and we were on the prairie. It happened quite suddenly, not a gradual thing.
Once here the roads were quite good and even though they were gravel you could really haul the mail. We were making excellent time even with having to slow down for the occasional cattle guard or pothole in the road. Sometimes, there would be a farmer on his tractor bush hogging the ditches, but they would move over for you and wave. This is America!
We rolled into Newkirk about 3:30 and secured a room at the local mom/pop motel. I asked for a room on the second floor. He grinned and said he was sold out of second floor rooms. For dinner we had to load up and go about 7 miles north to a casino where a passable feast was prepared and promptly scarfed down. Everyone wished us luck as we entered the casino. Not sure what they were talking about but I thought maybe they meant good luck getting to the restaurant through all the cigarette smoke in the casino!👴🏻
